One could say the black and white stripes immediately call to mind the Trickster Kachina doll, who like all Tricksters can be said to make meaning out of the meaningless. In this piece, ambiguity between foreground/background, an allusion to constellations with the sparkling gold connected dots set in heavy impasto, and the burnt orange pinwheel-like shape, spin and transform this painting object into a painting presence—a symbol of the comedy of opposites.
