Double Realm
oil on wood, canvas over shaped stretcher
83 x 69 x 1.5 inches

The double realm has been defined as when time and eternity are one; also, the moment in and out of time. Rilke in Sonnets to Orpheus writes:…only in the double realm do our voices carry all they can say.” I first heard mention of the double realm while this painting was nearing completion and was wondering what to call it. The shadow shapes on the right side are a mirror image turned upside down of the colored shapes on the left side and are held in suspension around a darkening center and so I thought Double Realm would be a good title for this painting. Furthermore, it sounded to me very much like the “still point” and possibly an aspiration of all art making, and I liked that the title appeared as a synchronous event just when I needed a title.
